President's Report
FROM SEPTEMBER 2007 BRANCH 11 NEWS
Approximately eight (8) months after the expiration of the 2001-2006 National Agreement, the National Association of Letter Carriers and the United States Postal Service reached a tentative agreement on a five-year contract that was unanimously endorsed by the members of the Executive Council. The agreement has a pay increase in each of the five years along with two cost of living allowances per year, along with other benefits and work rules. As in all negotiations, no one gets everything they want, but that’s how negotiation works! By the end of August, all active members should have returned their ballots. In my August 6th letter to the membership, I urged all to return their ballots and support this five-year contract.
As I reflect over the years that the NALC has been negotiating contracts with the Postal Service, this Union has gotten its members an annual pay raise and two cost of living adjustments through either negotiation or arbitration. This is something everyone should be proud of. As always, when situations such as this occur, I think about those non-members who receive the same benefits as our dues paying members. I am extending an open invitation to all non-members to seize this opportunity to fill out a form 1187 and join hands with your fellow Brothers and Sisters in pulling your own weight. Simply put, you are too heavy and we can no longer afford to give you a free ride! Those men and women who risked their jobs back in 1970 during the work stoppage, is something that all letter carriers employed at that time, will never forget. The struggle in itself should be enough to motivate those carriers who are not members to join this great Union. There is no way we would be enjoying the wages and benefits that we have today if not for what took place in 1970! Not one of these non-members is saying “I’m not a member, so I’m going to donate it back”. If you know someone who falls in this category, please let me know. The new carriers coming into the Postal Service today are made aware that, not too long ago, letter carriers were not paid a decent wage and had to have a second job, just to make ends meet. We have heard all of the excuses why some of us are not members of the Union. Excuses will no longer be accepted, fill out an 1187 today!
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Sister Debra Hamilton, who works out of the Henry W. McGee Station. Sister Hamilton was chosen as the 2007 ‘Central Region Hero of the Year’ by the National Association of Letter Carriers. She will be honored by the NALC in Washington, DC on September 20, 2007. She was on her way to work one morning when she came upon an automobile accident. Sister Hamilton stopped to see if she could be of any assistance. She noticed one of the victims lying on the ground, not breathing. Sister Hamilton resuscitated the victim using CPR and stayed on the scene until an emergency crew arrived. We are very proud to have Sister Hamilton as a member of Branch 11 – she is by all means, a Hero!
Let’s keep those IPALC and COLCPE donations coming, because the struggle is never over!
Fraternally,
Jimmie Canada
